“Entering the world of Big Data gave us new insights, on a real time basis, regarding cyber attackers. We learned that getting inside the Big Data field of expertise, is needed so we can understand and acquire the attackers’ patterns and secrets. We searched inside all the information and found cyber attackers who are not armatures or young and inexperienced. One of our tools for this process was ‘Machine Learning’.”
The speaker, Major Sephi Cohen, the head of operational information research in IDF’s Tele-communications branch. He gave a talk during People and Computers’ BI&Big Data conference held in Tel Aviv and hosted by Flora Levin, Co CEO in B-Pro.
Major Cohen revealed that “We made a journey into the BI world, and it took us away from traditional BI that focuses mainly on reports, and turned us into an organization that effectively uses and manufactures Machine learning, with advanced learning capabilities and predictive abilities. We entered a world that not so long ago was a mystery to us.”
He also added about MATZPEN, the unite he heads in the telecommunications branch: “It basically serves as a software development house, with 750 developers. As I mentioned, only recently we understood that we needed to delve deeper, to gain new abilities and insights. It took us a very short amount of time to reach those insights, and the bonus was that we also gained important operational and intelligence value.”
Major Cohen concluded that “In the cyber world, if you go deep you can spot the ‘weird’ and ‘unusual’ behaviors. It helps us focus on what is not normal, to locate attackers inside the sea of information. Creating real time analysis engines helps us in the cyber world, as well as other places.”
