Hackers have managed to penetrate Rafael (Rafael Advanced Defense Systems), IAI (Israel Aerospace Industries) and Elisra‘s IT systems. Those are the 3 companies who designed, developed and built the Iron Dome system. According to reports in KrebsOnSecurity, the hackers managed to steal an enormous amount of very sensitive documents relating to the development of the system, its activity and other security system’s missile defense technologies. These hacks were not made public until now, were made during the years 2011 and 2012.
Intelligence and cyber threat firm CyberESI stated that Chinese hackers attacked the communication networks of the three companies between October 2011 and August 2012. The firm’s founder and CEO, Yosef Driesel, said that the break-ins timings and the method used prove that the hackers were looking for Iron Dome related information, and were using focused Phishing style of attack. He also said that many of the documents that were stolen had a classified label, including one such document, hundreds of pages in length, that deals with the HETZ 3 missile, that a major part of its technology was developed by Boeing and other American companies.
Alisra and Rafael didn’t comment. IAI spokesperson Eliana Fishler said to People and Computers that: “The reports on information leak are not true. These reports relate to a penetration attempt to the civil un classified network in the company, that supposedly happened a few years back. The IAI information security systems are working according to the strictest requirements, and in this case as in other cases, their effectiveness wasa proven.”
