“The ministry of science, together with the National Cyber Center in the Prime minister office, intends to invest Hundreds of millions of Shekels to promote IT and mostly cyber defense. These investments will turn Israel into the leading player in the field”, Said Israeli Science, technology and aerospace minister, and former head of Shabak, Yaakov Peri.
Minister Peri was the guest of honor and keynote speaker in the 22nd ECIS (European conference on information Systems), that was recently held in Tel Aviv.
According to Peri, the plan his office has is quite ambitious: “We will turn Israel into one of the world’s most important cyber centers. Beer Sheva will become a giant campus, the middle east’s capital of cyber. Today there are 200 start ups that are concentrating on cyber, and in the previous year the investment in them were quadrupled. This is a field of national importance, and my office treats it like one.”
Israel is attacked and must defend itself. If it doesn’t, the very existence of the country is at stake. The internet caused a revolution in the world, similar to the industrial revolution, but alongside the many benefits, it has some dangers and threats that are linked with illegal activities – a cyber attack can cause a malfunction in transport systems or traffic lights infrastructure, and even hurt entire cities by cutting regular power or water. Defending such attacks is hard, not even RSA, EMC‘s security division, or Lockheed Martin, are immune from this threat.”
Peri concluded in an optimistic notion: “Many countries are attacked daily, but Israel is in a better condition to fending off this threat”.
